At one minute past eleven on the evening of Tuesday the 8th of May 1945 UK time (thats 23:01 to those of you with those new-fangled 24-hour clocks) all hostilities in Europe ceased completely. The Second World War in Europe had ended, the fighting was done and the time for celebrating, and then rebuilding, had begun. This was Victory in Europe Day – or VE Day, and it was met with acclaim, elation, relief – and some considerable uncertainty. Some European states actually celebrate the 9th of May as VE Day, being an hour or more ahead of the UK, but for us here at NASAM, the UK date will do very nicely thank you.
